Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris

A close relative of Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio is the fastest growing white wine in the US—and a veritable contender to Chardonnay. It is widely planted in Europe where it expresses a range of styles depending on the terroir and winemaking regimen. In the Northern Italian regions of Trentino-Alto-Adige and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Pinot Grigio yields crisp, lean and refreshing wines.

In Alsace, the grape shows more mineral characters and a silky, almost oily texture and the German expression, known as Rulander, is rich and full-bodied. Pinot Grigio typically has a delicate nose with lightly floral or citrus notes and high acidity with citrus, pear, and apple flavors. In recent years, Oregon has gained some prominence for their Pinot Gris, and California plantings have increased significantly—no doubt due to the popularity of this easy to quaff wine.
