Falkenstein, Austria
48º43'N 16º35'E

Falkenstein is a picturesque Austrian village, rich in winemaking soils and history. It is set on steep hillsides in eastern Weinviertel, Austria's largest wine appellation spanning over 16,000 hectares and producing nearly a third of the country's wine. Falkenstein's winding streets (Kellergassen) are lined with facades of cellar houses, still intact over many generations of home-based winemaking. The town also features the ruins of the Falkenstein castle (continued below).

Grüner Veltliner is the primary grape grown in Weinviertel. Welschriesling is also grown and often used for the production of sparkling wines. Other major wine types are Wei§burgunder, Riesling, and Zweigelt. Chardonnay and Blauer Portugieser are also regional specialties.

The Weinviertel region, like its wines, is truly vibrant—filled with young people enjoying summer evenings outdoors sipping fresh white wine at the many country inns (Heurigen).

The rich land is dominant with soils of loess, loam, primary rock and black earth. However, nearly all soil types can be found, which is certainly reflected in the wide spectrum of grape varieties. Furthermore, the vines endure hot summers and icy winters, which add to the strong, expressive character of the wines.
