Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
46º2'N 13º29'E

The best Italian white wines come from a small region in the northeast corner of the country called Friuli-Venezia Giulia. With the Alps to the north and the Adriatic to the south, this region has the marine influence ideal for fully ripening white wine grapes. The wines are typically unoaked to showcase the natural fruit and crisp acidity yielding wines that are pure and focused with verve and full-bodied flavors. Average yields here are the lowest in Italy and consequently much of the wine is of a premium quality level. The predominant white grapes are Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Tocai Friulano, the local favorite (continued below).

For reds, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are most popular. Friuli has strong cultural diversity going back hundreds of years. The region lies in the path of historic trade routes between the Byzantine Empire and Veneto and was a part of the Venetian Republic. With Slovenia to the East and Germany and Austria to the North, the region has a strong affinity to these cultures. The most prestigious wine districts are the Colli Orientali and the Collio in the east near the Slovenian border. The terraced vineyards here have well-draining marl and sandstone soils and produce wines with exquisite and pure, natural fruit expression.
