John Caldwell's hillside vineyard is located in Coombsville, east of the city of Napa. The exposure is mostly north to northwest and tends to be cooler than many other Napa Valley vineyards. His grapes are sold to several famous Napa Valley wineries including Rudd and Hess, Phelps and Viader. The very shallow volcanic basaltic soil (12 inches) and the cooler temperatures create grapes that tend to produce wines with complex aromas and powerful structures.
Block 18 is situated on the top of the hill and is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The vines here are amongst the oldest in the Napa Valley.
