One of the leading AVAs in the Napa Valley, Rutherford's 5000 acres of vineyards are home to some of California's most famous Cabernet Sauvignons, including Beaulieu Vineyard Nos. 1 and 2, Inglenook, Martha's Vineyard, Bella Oaks, Bosche, Sycamore and Mondavi's To Kalon. The famed Rutherford Bench is a confluence of three alluvial fans. These deep, well drained soils aren't particularly fertile, which makes them ideal for the production of high quality grapes. Rutherford also enjoys more sunshine than other parts of Napa Valley (continued below).
The University of California at Davis estimates that Rutherford enjoys over 3000 'degree days' during the growing season. These warm summer days give way to cool evenings, a temperature fluctuation that allows the fruit to ripen at a steady pace vital for top quality grape production.
