Philippe Melka
In the late 1980s, Philippe studied geology at the University of Bordeaux. In the final year of his degree he took a wine course, purely out of curiosity, and
from that moment on realized his passion and future lay with wine. In 1991 he completed a masters degree in agronomy and enology under the direction of Professor
Seguin, a terroir specialist. Philippe was fascinated by the relationship between soil and wine, and since then he has continued to combine his role as consultant
winemaker with viticultural work. After competing his studies, he set out for the new world to broaden his vinous horizons (continued below).
Philippe has learned his craft working alongside talented winemakers such as Jean Philippe Masclef and Jean Delmas at Haut Brion, Jean Claude
Berrouet and Christian Moueix at Petrus and Dominus, Paul Draper at Ridge Vineyards and Roberto Stucchi Prinnetti and Maurizio Castelli at Badia o Coltibuono. Philippe
consults for an elite band of wineries in Napa valley including Bryant Family Vineyard, Caldwell Vineyard, Hundred Acre, Lail Vineyards, Quintessa, Seavey Vineyard
and Vineyard 29. In 2005, Philippe was named 'Winemaker of the Year' by Food & Wine Magazine. In November 2008, Robert Parker selected Philippe as one of the 'World's Most Influential Wine Consultants'.
